Augustine in The City of God noted how different the God of the Bible was compared to the gods of the Romans. First, the gods of the Romans were limited in their power. Secondly, they were prone to the same failures as humans including lying, adultery, and murder. The Romans were not acquainted with the God of the Bible who is always faithful, quick to forgive, slow to anger, and takes no pleasure in the deaths of the wicked.
When people see God the way they see themselves it affects nearly every aspect of their faith. Although God is beyond human understanding, the Bible gives us glimpses into his nature. Any perception that you have of God that contradicts the Bible is idolatry.
Having a child has helped me to see this in my own life. I don't expect God to tickle me, chase me around the house, or pour juice for me, but I am starting to understand how he loves me as a Father and wants the best for me.
