God was executed.
For committing blasphemy.
Against Himself.
I thought perhaps human logic was beyond understanding. I dwelled on this some more and realized crucifixion wasn't just an event that happened. The religious leaders had a lot to lose from this teacher from Nazareth.
The Pharisees believed salvation could be achieved from good works. Their interpretation of the Law of Moses included 613 commandments with lengthy debates about how to obey these laws. They also established synagogues in local communities and were the religious leaders away from the Temple in Jerusalem.
The Temple itself was controlled by the Sadducees. They were extremely wealthy. In order to bring a sacrifice, people exchanged their common currency for Temple money at exorbitant rates and then sell the buyer an animal for sacrifice. To illustrate their wealth, an excavation of a Sadducee's home revealed a bottle of wine worth $3000 in today's money. They also did not believe in the resurrection of the dead – a key teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Jesus wounded the pride of both the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Pride has it's roots in insecurity. And it always gives birth to sin.
We really need to have the mind of Christ and conduct ourselves with humble hearts.
