My son started pre-school this week. My wife and I have done as much as possible during this time of social distancing to insure that he knows how to interact with adults and other children. We have set and re-enforced boundaries. Through my wife's prodding, I also read the Bible to him each night. I have learned that this comes with several benefits.
1. It establishes the parents' role as the child's spiritual leader. Following the example of the patriarchs, the father is the spiritual head of the household and needs to take on the role of Bible teacher to their kids.
2. The Bible identifies who God is and his role in the child's life.
3. The Bible sets boundaries on moral, and sometimes, legal behavior. "Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not kill", etc
4, Bible time can prepare kids for their future in school and careers when they will need to sit still and be quiet. My mother was shocked when she started working as a Kindergarten Teacher's Aid. Many children had lived in homes where they were allowed to do whatever they wanted without consequences. The first two weeks of the school year were usually spent getting those children to listen and follow instructions. And it's not the school's job to teach them those things.
5. Bible time can be used to teach both discipline and grace. My son is very active and likes to run around. I rather he do that than be raised by NetFlix. But I also realize he needs to understand that there are times when he needs to sit still and be quiet. So I bribe him with gummies.
The first two nights were spent teaching the behavior. He ran around and screamed the third night. He went to bed gummy-less. I let him know that's what happens when he disobeys. He ran around and screamed again on the fourth night. I gave him a gummy and explained that grace is when God gives us something we don't deserve. He has had a gummy every night since I started reading the Bible to him four months ago.
